Prach Niyomkar

b.1984, works and live in Bangkok, Thailand

Prach Niyomkar: In 2010, I founded the Mann Craft brand, serving as both the founder and designer. Despite lacking any knowledge of weaving or natural dyes, including the unfamiliarity with indigo dye, I embarked on a journey of continuous learning. Collaborating with local artisans and skilled crafts teachers, I acquired the necessary skills. Reading research materials and books and conducting experiments in my studio further nurtured my craft. Mann Craft products embody wearable art, reflecting my ideas, inspirations, and emotions in each collection, capturing a specific moment in time.

To excel as an artist and ensure the production of high-quality products, I believe it is essential to utilize my own materials, such as plant dyes, within a dedicated studio space that fosters inspiration. Fortunately, in Thailand, numerous organizations provide support to makers for promoting and selling their products and brands, both in Bangkok and internationally. I have been fortunate enough to participate in craft fairs, where I have had the opportunity to showcase and sell my products, teach others, and continue learning

Sakon Nakhon indigo dye textiles encompass a wide range of motifs, including both traditional patterns and contemporary designs. These textiles are crafted using various fibers, such as cotton, handspun cotton, silk, and rayon. Notably, Sakon Nakhon holds the distinction of being Thailand's largest producer of indigo.

To ensure the production of high-quality natural indigo paste, we cultivate indigo trees (indigofera tinctoria) within the region. Many local dyeing houses in Sakon Nakhon continue to adhere to time-honored recipes for indigo dyeing, preserving the authenticity and heritage of the craft.

However, the younger generation of local artisans in Sakon Nakhon is also embracing innovation, bringing forth new techniques and ideas for dyeing and weaving. This infusion of fresh perspectives and creativity breathes new life into the traditional art form, adding a contemporary touch to the indigo dye textiles.

Through the harmonious blending of traditional motifs and modern design elements, alongside the use of various fibers, Sakon Nakhon indigo dye textiles showcase the rich cultural heritage of the region while adapting to the evolving tastes and preferences of contemporary audiences.

Prach Niyomkar specializes in textile art that is environmentally friendly. Known for using materials he grows himself and materials sourced locally from Sakon Nakhon Province, the artist uses natural dye from indigo and plant-based colors in his works. For this exhibition, the artist uses his knowledge and experience to create dyed-leather artworks.
